Thursday Thoughts : Favourable Favours

With Indian weather the way it is – the winter months are a mad rush of activity. Weddings, festivals, holidays – they all come together like a windfall of good cheer, rich food, parties, presents, more parties, high spirits, lots of meeting and greeting and even more parties.

Regardless of who you are or who you know, it is a given that your house will be flooded with all types of greeting cards, Diwali presents and of course, many wedding invitations.

I, for one, am always excited to open up the decorative box that accompanies invitations. Everytime I open one, I feel like I might just find something imaginative, creative or just plain different. I’m saddened to report that I’m rarely overjoyed to see the contents.

Dry fruit? Really? Don’t get me wrong. I know its traditional and all that and probably costs the earth to send out to hundreds of invitees but in this new, creative, artistic and innovative world order is there nothing more extraordinary that we can do??

I know I write this piece at the risk of being harshly scratched off many-a-list but without fearing the consequences i must say this – I have nothing against mithai, but gigantic laddoos are a big no no – pun intended.

Fact remains that some people dont ‘want’ to do things differently and I don’t mean to offend anyone – but, if you’re one of the few who do want to make their invitations memorable, we have a few pointers.

A couple of wedding invitations have stood out in my mind as particularly nice. Among these was a box of fig chocolate – how cool!

Then there was a box that contained a disposable camera – for use at the wedding, and a cd of music that we could expect to hear at the sangeet!

Sadly, that’s it folks – in the time span of a quarter of a century, only ‘two’ invitations made it to my long term memory.

Here are our ideas :

1. Homemade (or made in someone elses home) fruit preserve or marmalade.

2. Jars of organic honey

3. Personalized shot glasses

4. Cake pops

5. Cupcakes

6. Packet of seeds of your favourite plant or even a tree!

7. Marshmallows

I have to add this even though my mother said a firm NO when I suggested it,

8. Chilly pickle

If I was to get any of the above with an invitation card I would

a) be overjoyed

b) thank the gods I have such cool friends

c) definitely attend the wedding – and isn’t that the whole point after all?

A post on how to package these favours prettily is coming up soon! Stay tuned. Over and out.

Thursday Thoughts: Photo Booth

The first time I came across a photo booth, or Smile Booth as they call it- was here on The Flash Dance website. It was instant love for me, right from the photography to the music they have on their website especially the playlists which you can download if you want!! But before I deviate (because it’s so easy to get lost in their awesome website)- let’s go back to what we are here for!

So what is this photo-booth business? A good explanation can be seen in the F.A.Q section on the Smilebooth website here.

These photographs are from the Smilebooth section from The Flash Dance.

Basically, it’s a mini studio set up at your wedding where guests can go and take their own photographs and go crazy doing their own thing . It’s a totally different angle to what the photographer who is covering the wedding will get! So, at the end of the wedding – there will be a whole bunch of fun pictures that you wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s a space where your guests aren’t conscious of being watched and can get as creative or crazy as they want. All they have to do is click on the remote button and take as many photos as their heart desires!

These three photos are from Our Labor Of Love’s blog.

Thursday Thoughts: Custom Portraits

While looking for someone to design a header for our blog  , we focussed our search entirely within ETSY– a great place to buy and sell all things handmade! There are so many creative people out there and we thank Kajal for telling us about it, otherwise we might never have known!

While we did find our logo/header designer(look up) , we also came across alot of other cool artists – one especially cool artist is Nan Lawson.

What caught our eye at Nan’s shop were these awesome custom made portraits which we knew would be perfect for our Thursday Thought Section!

Custom made portrait.

Think about it- you’re newly married or you’ve just had a baby and you want something different to remember the time by? How awesome would it be to get a portrait like this- so original and unique? This is *almost* as cool as an Unreal Photo! [I know- slightly vain, but hey! we had to put it out there 🙂 ]

It’s a perfect present from the bride to the groom or the other way around, or for an anniversary !  You can find some more of her custom portraits here on her website.

She does a whole lot of other stuff which is worth a look and if you are wondering why we are going on and on about her- its simply because we think her style is great!! And when her shop opens up again, we are going to be first in line for a custom portrait!

We love books!

and we love coffee!

If you want to see some more of her artwork , you can find her on facebook as well!

All artwork featured here belongs to the artist-Nan Lawson.

Behind The Scenes : Glam Girls Night Out!

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at an Unreal photoshoot?

Let me enlighten you- hours of make up and hair styling, lots of adjusting and re-adjusting of clothes and jewelry, constant contortioning by the hard working model, props popping in and out of frames, usually a list from 8 tracks playing in the background, some food for the weary team and unexpected hurdles along the way. Not very different from normal photo shoots, some would say, but I think you would understand what we mean by Unreal if you were there!! It’s hard to put into words!

As the shoot progresses, the stylist (that’s me!) ,the photographer (Kismet) , as well as the model all become increasingly light headed and delusional.

Unreal are us.

Model madness!

Fabulous Team!

As a result, as we wrap up the days work, we come away with some side splittingly funny dialogues, pictures that run into thousands and a royal MESS at the workplace – we always have SO much fun – we decided to share some exclusive sneak peek photos with all of you from our last shoot.

Thursday Thoughts : Shagan Storage Solutions

At most Indian weddings there is this one carefully selected relative and a very large handbag (which doesn’t necessarily go with her outfit!). This relative (and the handbag) are planted for the sole purpose of stowing away envelopes filled with cash that will be thrust into the brides, grooms or immediate family members’ hands throughout the wedding. In India, we call this shagan – and this shagan money serves as a wedding present.

Perhaps this whole process needn’t to be so cumbersome – we found some creative solutions to the shagan storage problem.

Even though you might need an armed guard lurking around the table atop which you place these vintage looking boxes and cases or birdcages painted pretty colours and decorated with flowers – these ideas are beautiful as well as practical.
